This is a Ristretto Post [Short and Intense]:
There’s a worrying trend happening as people approach 50: many professionals are being fired for various reasons (A.k.a. Costs). The end result is the same. What to do now?
The usual first option, taken by 98% of people, is to prepare a CV and look for job openings on LinkedIn and other websites. Good Luck.
When you’re nearing 50, you’re at a disadvantage and it’s harder to find opportunities. We sincerely hope some of you find work the usual way, although unfortunately, most won’t, and that’s frustrating.
The second option is to create a new business from scratch. At this age, it’s quite a challenge, but the good news is that you have several unfair advantages that will undoubtedly lead you to success. With your average 25 years of experience, you have:
- Deep knowledge of your industry. That is, you understand the market’s shortcomings from an insider’s perspective.
- Professional networks: You have decades of relationships with clients, partners, and mentors.
- Emotional intelligence: This skill improves with life experiences, enhancing social skills.
- Financial wisdom, budgeting, forecasting, resource allocation, and crisis management: You’ve survived economic recessions, layoffs, kids and industry shifts.
- Leadership experience: You’ve led teams, navigated politics, and made tough decisions.
- Pattern recognition: You know what works and what doesn’t before you even try. You decide which path to take.
You can work in both options, and we recommend it, but one thing is clear: you’ll never get rich working for someone else. Yes, it’s very comfortable to have benefits and receive a paycheck at the end of the month, but if you return to working for someone else, you’ll be in a vicious cycle since there are no jobs that last until retirement.
That’s why we encourage working in the second option. It’s more demanding, full of challenges and chaos, but in the long run, it’s more rewarding. Nowdays as any new tech, we recommend you to start learning about AI and apply it to what you know. We hope you choose the right path.
